February 14, 2021 Poison the Parish. Red Rabbit on Heart Day.

I've had a thought about my reaction to these songs I feel compelled to write about. If I connect strongly with the lyrics, I feel them through my heart.  If I can feel the music, I hear them in my soul.  If the connection is that strong for both of those it's just like soaring.  I am watching a video of the Seether Live@RED, Moscow concert.   Wait, I know these are likely unauthorized, but for a Seether newbie like me, it's the only option for seeing them live.  I apologize but it's to incredible to see and hear the live performances of the music I can't help myself.  O.K. I don't want to help myself.  Like I said, I got in late to the Seether Party.  I was watching interviews and the band was talking about the live stream concert in August.  Live and up for a week and then, as Shaun said, gone forever.  I heard this in December.  Aargh!  No DVD? I got money!  Really I do!  Gone forever.  Just stab me through the heart, why don't you.

Anyway, back to the Moscow concert and soaring.  You can hear the audience singing along to many of the songs, but when the band starts Broken, the whole audience is singing with Shaun.  In fact he alternates parts with them at the beginning so the audience is singing by themselves.  I'm sure this happens a lot, but I thought, how would if be to have your song sung back to you with such love.  There is a recording of the 2013 concern in South Africa of Shaun singing The Gift.  The audience there sings the whole damn song.  Every single word.  It's amazing.  It's got to feel amazing.  Soaring.

The next album is, indeed, Poison the Parish.  I can say before I bought and listened to this one I hadn't heard any of the songs.  So, do any of the radio stations in my state play Seether?  Hello?  Anyone?  I checked the alternate stations and Seether is not amongst the most played bands. To be fair, maybe they are in a list of "not so much played bands" but I don't remember hearing any since Broken was on the radio in, um, a long time ago.  So, streaming on my phone through my car speakers, or playing  my cd's in the cd player.  I understand the newer cars don't have cd players.  Guess I'm not getting a new car anytime soon.  Just shut up, I know I can get it after factory.  One of my previous cars had a cd and a cassette player in it.  So there.  I'm not a big car person.  A co-worker asked me what kind of car I bought and I said, "Blue".  Does it work?  Does it have a radio with a cd player and air conditioning?  And can I live with the color?  That's it.

Poison the Parish

1) Stoke the Fire.  A strong start to the album, as expected.  I like the little "hitch" in the music before the lyrics start.  This one has so much tension.  And after two chorus' of "Whose going to stoke the fire." did Shaun even have a voice left?  I'm not fighting about this one.  I definitely like it.  A lot.

2) Betray and Degrade.  This one is quite a meal.  So much in the music, so much in the lyrics.  I feel a little over my head, but in a good way.  I want more.  Special features on this one: music video and the making of the music video.  Such a nice little song, except when it isn't.  Lots of YouTube comments on the creepy smiles.  You can always count on some humor with Seether.  Any band who has the balls to  make a music video shown riding into town on stick ponies has my vote. [Country song]
You know I'm a sucker for special features.

3) Something Else.  Classic Seether rough and tumultuous with sad and angry lyrics.  Do you want a hug or would you rather punch someone out?  Your choice.  Masterful. Is that Dale's bass at the end? Maybe.  I can play the same notes on the G string of my guitar so maybe it's not bass.  Any bass players out there, help me out.

4) I'll Survive. I love, love, love the start of this song.  Spare folk-sounding guitar and voice to begin and then the bass and drums cut in.  I love that so much I listened to just that part over more than once.  Definitely one that's an anthem for lots of us.  Belt it out in the car.  You'll feel better.  This would be my favorite song on the album if Against the Wall wasn't also on it.

5) Let You Down.  Head banging heaven.  For those who don't throw up when they try it.  "You got me feeling like an animal."  Anyone else would be making a sexual innuendo.  With Shaun, I can see the cringing dog in the corner baring his teeth in fear.  The complexity of the lyrics keeps me fed through the many times I listened to it.  The music drives this train as well.  The guitars scream and what the hell is that pipe sound near the end?  Is John whacking a mike stand or what?

6) Against the Wall. I would buy this album if only this song were on it.  It makes me cry every time I hear it. I just read through the lyrics and I started to tear up.  Driving down the freeway with tears running down my face is not a good look, guys.  "I can't seem to find the peace I've heard about, Am I not supposed to?" kills me.  This song is overwhelming.  The music gives me hope, though and it ends on a rise so I'm not totally laying on the floor in a pool.  How is it as an acoustic?  Oh, my. Lovely.
